Women's Volleyball Drops Two on Final Day of Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-set defeats to Illinois State and Long Beach State on Saturday to conclude play in the 10th-annual Harvard Invitational.

Corinne Bain was named to the Harvard Invitational All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of play after averaging 2.44 kills, 5.67 assists and 3.44 digs per set. The junior notched a triple-double against Rutgers on Friday in the team's opener, and followed that up with a double-double versus Illinois State on Saturday.

Kathleen Wallace was also impressive over the weekend, turning in 3.00 kills per set and 3.33 digs. Caroline Labanowski (1.29 bps) and Christina Cornelius (1.22 bps) were a force at the net, with Sindhu Vegesena (4.67 dps) cleaning up behind them.

Harvard was unable to find a rhythm against Illinois State and fell to the Redbirds 25-18, 25-22, 25-16. The Crimson hit just .103 with Kathleen Wallace's seven kills leading the way, while Illinois State hit at a .291 clip paced by Jaelyn Keene's 16 strikes. Christina Cornelius and Bain chipped in six kills apiece, with Bain adding 12 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.

The Crimson's struggles continued in the nightcap as Long Beach State escaped with a 27-25, 25-22, 25-15 victory. Paige Kebe, Caroline Labanowski and Wallace each scored nine kills as Wallace added nine digs and Labanowski four blocks. Bain just missed her third-straight double-double with 15 assists, nine digs and five blocks, but Nele Barber (19 kills, nine digs) and Ashley Murray (14 kills, .737 hitting percentage) powered the 49ers to the victory.

Harvard returns to action next weekend as it heads to Washington, District of Columbia, for the Service Academy Classic. The Crimson will face Cal (Sept. 11, 10 a.m.), Air Force (Sept. 11, 4:30 p.m.) and Army (Sept. 12, 1 p.m.) in a unique tournament which will take place inside The Pentagon.
