Women's Volleyball Welcomes Four Recruits in Class of 2021

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard volleyball head coach Jen Weiss has announced the incoming class of 2021: Evelyn Gray, Mindie Mabry, Sydney Vach, and Sandra Zeng. The group of four come to Cambridge from Florida (Mabry, Vach), Washington D.C. (Gray), and Hawaii (Zeng).

The incoming freshmen join a group that earned its fourth straight top-4 finish in Ivy League play and returns 13 letterwinners from a season ago.

Four year letterwinner and senior captain at Maret School…Three-time DCSAA First Team All-State selection…Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention (2016)…Four-Time ISL AA All-League selection…Led Maret School to DC State finals (2014, 2015)…DCSAA Academic All-State selection (2014, 2015)…Volunteered with Behrend Builders and Capitol Area Food Bank…Also competed in varsity track as a sophomore…Played for Metro VBC club team.

"Evelyn has a very explosive jump and is quick to get off the floor," Weiss said. "She has played on a top club volleyball team in the country for the last three years. She will be bring a spark to our offense and has a great positive energy on court. I look forward to having Evelyn in the gym and I know she will contribute to our program both on and off the court. "

Senior captain at Bishop Verot HS…Florida Athletic Coaches Association State All Star (2016)…Fort Myers News Press All-Area First Team selection (2015, 2016)…Named MaxPreps/AVCA Player of the Week in Florida (Aug. 29)…Led Bishop Verot to Florida 4A State Final Four (2016)…Holds school record for most kills in a single season (461 in 2016)…National Honor Society…Student volunteer at Gulf Coast Hospital and Lee Memorial Cardiology Center…Played for Fort Myers Fusion and USA South Volleyball club teams.

"Mindie has played the six rotation outside hitter for both her high school and club team," Weiss said. "She brings with her solid ball control both offensively and defensively. She has incredible potential to dominate on the pin for us.  She reads the game well and has a great court awareness. Her natural athletic talent shines through when she plays. I look forward to watching her raise her level when she gets to the college game."

Four year letterwinner at Winter Springs HS and Oviedo HS (senior year)…senior captain at Oviedo HS…All-Central Florida Second Team selection (2016)…First Team All-Seminole Athletic Conference selection (2015, 2016)…Prep Volleyball Special Mention High School All-American (2016)…Helped Winter Springs HS to Florida 8A Volleyball State Championship (2015)…National Honor Society…Volunteered for Gatlinburg Relief Fund…Also competed in varsity track…Played for Orlando Volleyball Academy club team.

"Sydney is one of the top liberos in the country and was recognized by Prep volleyball for her stellar defensive," Weiss said. "She is ready to take on any attacker. She covers the court and her natural athletic quickness and ability to read the attackers will make her a top defender.    She has a consistent passing platform and will bring ball control to our serve receive.  I look forward to having Sydney join us and I know she will pursue athletic and academic excellence while at Harvard."

Three year letterwinner at Punahou School…Named to Martin Luther King Pakela All-Tournament Team (2015)…Helped Punahou win HHSA Division I State Championship (2014)…National Honor Society…Served as Food Division Head at 2016 Punahou Carnival…Played for Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club.

"Sandra will bring a strong work ethic to our gym and will fit well into our defensive system," Weiss said. "She will bring ball control to our practices and has some fabulous training. I look forward to watching her grow in all areas of her game.  She will add to our competitive and push those around her to be better."
