SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The No. 18 Harvard women's water polo team captured its first overtime victory of the season in the 9-6 win over Santa Clara. The Crimson improves to 13-3.
The first period of pay saw a collective three goals from each team as Santa Clara tabbed back-to-back before Quinne Pursell fired the final goal of the period. Santa Clara quickly answered back with a goal from Lauren Paxton followed by another counter-goal from Grace Thawley. Heading into the half, the Bronco's notched another score to regain a one-goal lead.
Both squads saw only one goal each in the third before moving into a nail-biting final eight minutes of regulation. Opening up with a sprint win from Borden Wahl, the Crimson carried the momentum into its defense as Sam Acker tallied four consecutive saves.
Immediately after a Bronco goal, Thawley linked up with Sofia Carrera-Justiz to bring them back within one. Down to its last 30 seconds, Sam Acker tossed the ball across the pool to an awaiting Kristen Hong who found the back of the net to force overtime. Throughout each extra period, Harvard held Santa Clara scoreless while dominating with three goals from Thawley and Hong.
- Senior goal-tender Sam Acker recorded a season-high 17 saves with two assists.
