Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman Katie Doherty
scored with one second left in the game to give the Harvard women's
lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Boston College Thursday afternoon in
the season finale for both teams.
It was the second-straight win for the Crimson who finish the
season 6-10 overall. Boston College drops to 9-9. Junior
tri-captain Sara Flood and senior Kaitlin Martin led the Crimson
with four points on two goals and two assists, while sophomore Jess
Halpern scored two goals as well. Freshman Tyler Petropulos
and senior Shannon Flynn also found the back of the net.
Boston College started the scoring off nine minutes into the
first half. The Crimson had an answer for each of the Eagles first
three goals. Flood evened the score at 1-1 and then Halpern tied it
at 2-2. Halpern scored her second goal of the game with 12:06 left
in the first half to tie the score at 3-3 and spark four-straight
Crimson tallies that allowed Harvard to take a 7-3 lead at
halftime. Martin had two goals and an assist during the 12 minutes
stretch.
The Eagles scored the first goal of the second session 22
seconds after the first draw. Less than a minute later Lauren
Fitzpatrick scored her second of the day to close the gap at 7-5.
Halpern won the next draw control for the Crimson and Flood
answered a little over two minutes later to extend the visitor's
lead to three. Boston College took advantage of a Harvard turnover
and put one in the net with 2:30 remaining in the game. The home
team won the next draw control and immediately took a shot that
went between the pipes to make it a one-point game.
Harvard called a timeout with 1:33 on the clock. Martin won the
draw control but BC managed to win the ball back and fired a shot
to even the score at 8-8 with 30 ticks on the clock. Harvard needed
to win the draw control and did just that as Flynn won the ball and
handed off to Martin. Martin found Doherty opened and she
quickly rifled a shot past the BC goalie with just one second left
to play.
Junior Katherine Martino made seven saves in her second start in
a row. She improves to 2-2 overall.
Halpern finishes the season with a team-leading 46 goals.
Martin, who had 38 goals this season, finishes her collegiate
career with 139 goals, which is fourth in Harvard history.
