CAMDEN, N.J.-The Radcliffe
heavyweight varsity four placed third in its heat to advance
directly to the event semifinals, highlighting the first day of
competition for the Black and White at the NCAA Rowing
Championships on the Cooper River.
Despite the second-fastest final 500 meters of the day, the
Black and White varsity eight missed a semifinal berth by one-fifth
of a second in the morning heat before placing fifth and the
repechage in the afternoon. The second varsity eight took fifth in
its heat and seventh in its repechage.
The varsity four will race in the semifinals at 10 a.m.
Saturday, seeking a top-three finish in order to reach Sunday's
grand final. The boat is made up of sophomore Tara Larson, freshman
Katie O'Hanlon, junior Michaela Pewarski, senior Katherine Williams
and sophomore coxswain Rachel Rauh. The varsity and second varsity
eights will race in their respective third-level finals Sunday.
The Radcliffe four beat out Michigan State for third place in
its heat to march through to the semis. The Black and White got off
to a good start and led after 500 meters with a split of 1:48.42.
Virginia, however, took control of the race in the second 500
meters and MSU also passed Radcliffe, but the Black and White
passed the Spartans in the third 500. California pulled ahead of
both Radcliffe and Michigan State to take second, but Radcliffe
held off MSU by two seats in 7:34.98.
The varsity eight was the first Radcliffe boat to race and just
missed a direct path to the semis. Stanford gained an edge on the
field early, and Yale eventually emerged as the runner-up from a
tightly packed field. Washington, which had held second earlier,
led the Black and White by 1.72 seconds heading into the race's
final quarter. Radcliffe rowed the fastest last 500 in 1:38.29, but
the Huskies held on to the last qualifying spot by two-tenths of a
second, as the Black and White crossed the line in 6:34.80.
Radcliffe got off to a strong start in the repechage, holding
second place behind Southern California at the midway point. The
rest of the pack was not far behind, though, as Ohio State and
Michigan moved up to take the top two spots and join USC in the
semifinals. The Black and White, which was more than five seconds
faster than any of the other repechage squads in the heats,
finished in 6:27.10.
The Black and White second varsity held fourth for much of its
heat, entering the final 500 meters less than three seconds out of
the third semifinal berth and more than two ahead of fifth-place
Oregon State. Ohio State, however, held on for third and the
Beavers passed the Black and White. Radcliffe finished in 6:58.62.
Virginia won the heat and runner-up Washington joined the Cavaliers
and Buckeyes as direct qualifiers for the semifinals.
Radcliffe posted a repechage time of 6:42.45. The Black and
White stood fourth, one spot out of the semifinals, at the
1,000-meter mark, but was passed by Oregon State, Dartmouth and
Wisconsin in the second half of the race. Princeton, USC and
Clemson earned the remaining semifinal bid.
