CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard women's tennis
team defeated Cornell, 6-1, in the opening round of the ECAC
Tournament Friday afternonn at the Murr Center Tennis Courts. With
the win, the Crimson improves to 4-1 on the season.
Harvard clinched the doubles point after picking up wins in the
No. 1 and 2 matches. The duo of sophomore Holly Cao and junior
Samantha Rosekrans defeated Susan Sullivan and Natalia Sanchez, 8-5
in the No. 1 match. The rookie pair of Hideko Tachibana and Kristin
Norton handed Christine Ordway and Sarah O'Neil a 9-7 defeat. In
the No. 3 matchup, freshman Sophie Chang and sophomore Samantha
Gridley fell to the duo of Ruxandra Dumitruscu and Kristin Lim,
8-3.
In singles action, Harvard picked up five wins in the afternoon.
Cao easily defeated Ordway, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 1 matchup. In the
No. 2 position, Tachibana handed Lim a 6-3, 6-2 loss. Cornell's
O'Neil gave Norton a challenge in the No. 3 spot, but Norton
prevailed in three sets, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-2. Harvard's
Rosekrans cruised in the No. 4 matchup, defeating Sanchez 6-1, 6-1.
Harvard faced another challenge in the No. 5 matchup, as Cornell's
Sullivan took Chang to three sets. Chang came out on top, winning
6-1, 4-6, 13-11. Gridley fell in the No. 6 spot to Dumitrescu, 6-4,
2-6, 9-11.
Harvard faces Yale in the semifinal match Saturday at 2 p.m. Yale
defeated Boston University in its opening round matchup.
