NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Harvard men's tennis team
downed Princeton, 6-1, in the semifinals of the ECAC Championships,
Sunday afternoon. The Crimson picked up its third consecutive win
by sweeping the singles matches.
Harvard (3-2) picked up a victory in doubles play as sophomore
Alistair Felton and freshman Andy Nguyen teamed up to win at the
No. 2 position, 8-4. Junior Alexei Chijoff-Evans and rookie Joshua
Tchan nearly clinched the doubles point for the Crimson. The pair
fell in a tiebreaker, 7-3, after each side had won eight games.
However, the Tigers used a win at the top position to claim the
doubles point.
The Crimson did not back down after trailing 1-0 going into
singles play. Harvard won all six matches to claim the victory and
to earn a spot in the title tilt for the second year in a row.
Chijoff-Evans won in straight sets at the No. 1 spot. Felton moved
up to the No. 2 singles position and continued his winning ways,
picking up his fifth consecutive singles victory and team-best 11th
of the season. At the third singles slot, junior Aba Omodele-Lucien
rebounded to win a third set tiebreaker after winning the first set
and narrowly dropping the second. Three freshmen grabbed wins at
the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots. Tchan, Christo Schultz and Nguyen all won
their matches in convincing fashion, handling their opponents in
two sets.
Harvard will vie for its second-straight ECAC crown Monday
against top-seeded Columbia. The championship match is slated for a
1 p.m. start.
