CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A second-half surge by the
Harvard women's lacrosse team wasn't enough to overcome
a strong first half by No. 11 Boston University as the Crimson fell
to the Terriers, 13-9, Wednesday at Cumnock Field. The Crimson
slips to 2-3 on the year while BU improves to 4-2 on the season.
The Terriers took control in the first half as Rachel Collins
netted the game's first goal at 22:54, and BU went on to
score the next four in a row to take a 5-0 lead midway through the
stanza. Jen VanderMeulen tallied Harvard's first score at
8:46 but Terrier goals by Jenny Taft and Annie Stookesberry gave
the guests a 7-1 lead at the half.
BU extended its lead to 8-1 less than a minute into the second
stanza but Harvard rattled off four consecutive goals, two straight
by Melanie Baskind, to close the gap to 8-5 with 20:17 to play.
VanderMeulen netted two more goals down the stretch for the
Crimson, but BU was able to match their efforts to secure the 13-9
final.
VanderMeulen led all scorers with four goals in the game while
Baskind chipped in two goals and an assist. Taft and McKinley Curro
each had three goals for BU while Curro collected four assists in
the game. Katherine Martino made nine saves in net for the Crimson
while her counterpart Rachel Klein stopped 12 shots on the day for
the Terriers.
The Crimson continues its four-game homestand on Saturday as it
welcomes Cornell to Harvard Stadium for a 12 p.m., game.
