CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's tennis team won its second match of the weekend, cruising past Furman, 5-2, at the Murr Center Saturday afternoon.
Harvard jumped to a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point with two victories and singles wins from Kristin Norton at No. 1 and Hideko Tachibana at No. 3. Norton swept Lauren Kline, 6-1, 6-2, and Tachibana defeated Katherine Ouudin, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Harvard's top pair and No. 23-ranked Hideko Tachibana and Kristin Norton fell, but tandems at No. 2 and No. 3 picked up the Crimson. Hannah Morrill and Kelly Whelan doubled up Michele Stanford and Margaret Boyette, 8-4, and Samantha Gridley and Camille Jania coasted past Oudin and Amanda Murray, 8-3. Jania and Gridley (5-1) now lead the Crimson with five doubles victories during the doubles season.
Other than Norton and Tachibana, Jania was also a winner in a top three singles position. The junior took down Stanford, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 for her team-high fifth singles win since the New Year.
Hannah Morrill flipped Jania's winning tally, 7-5, 6-3, to take down Susan Bitetti in the No. 6 singles position.
After the match, the Crimson took time to give back to the local community by hosting a clinic for youth from the Tenacity tennis group. Tenacity is a local tennis and education program serving Boston's urban youth.
Harvard continues its non-conference schedule by hosting St. John's March 10 at the Murr Center. The match is slated for a noon start.
