The varsity eight outraced its seed to help the Black and White to a third-place finish on the Cooper River.
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Led by the varsity eight squad, who outpaced its seed to take home bronze, Harvard-Radcliffe heavyweight crew finished third overall Sunday at the Ivy League Women's Rowing Championships on the Cooper River.
The Black and White V8, seeded sixth coming into the weekend, nearly edged out Yale in the morning heats to finish third. In the marquee event, Radcliffe, stroked by Katie Wilcox and coxed by Jenny Wong, was neck-and-neck with Brown at the halfway mark. The Bears – who won the team trophy – regained their lead with 500 meters to go and the Black and White held off a surging Dartmouth to medal.
Princeton earned the automatic berth into the NCAA Championships with a win in the varsity eight race, clocking a time of 6:15.412. The Tigers sat second with 73 points in the team standings. Brown took home the overall points trophy (81), and earned a silver medal in the V8 race.
Radcliffe accumulated 60 points to finish seven points ahead of Yale, avenging the loss earlier this season. Dartmouth, Penn, Cornell and Columbia rounded out the field in the team standings.
The Black and White also took home bronze in the third varsity eight event. Locked with Princeton, Brown and Yale over the first 500m, Radcliffe held strong over the middle 1000 meters to distance itself from Yale and hold off a surging Penn. The 3V finished in a time of 6:50.338, ahead of Penn by half a boat length to earn the medal.
Radcliffe finished fourth in the 2V, V4A and VB. The Black and White await their fate in the NCAA Championships. The selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com on Tuesday, May 20 at 5 p.m.
