NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The women's tennis team sent four members of the squad to the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Yale Oct. 20-23; Natasha Gonzalez, June Lee, Irene Lu and Erica Oosterhout represented the Crimson at the annual event.
In the doubles competition, Lee and Oosterhout made their mark, earning a spot in the quarterfinals after securing wins over St. Johns University (8-5), Seton Hall (8-7[1]) and Boston College (8-6). Gonzalez and Lu also tallied two victories in the doubles round, including an 8-2 win over Rutgers and an 8-3 win over UConn.
In the singles flight, Lee and Oosterhout both advanced to the quarterfinals. Lee entered the singles flight ranked in the No. 17-32 seed group, giving her a bye in the first round. She faced Ruth Crawford of UMass in the second round, defeating her 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In the third round, Lee was up against Ivy League foe, Alyza Benotto of Brown, and secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Lee fought a tough battle in the quarterfinals, but was unable to stop Gabrielle Knutson of Syracuse, falling 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Oosterhout was also awarded a bye in the first round when she entered the tournament ranked at the No. 9-16 seed level. Oosterhout faced Brittany Collins of UMass in the second round, defeating her 7-5, 6-2. She then conquered Gita Benahdi of Drexel in two, 6-1, 7-5. Oosterhout met her match in the quarterfinals, and was stopped by Kana Daniel of Penn 6-4, 6-2. Gonzalez and Lu were unable to advance in the singles competition after fighting against Anna Woosley of UMass and Emily Safron of BC, respectively.
The Crimson will take a one week break from competition before hosting the Harvard Invitational Nov. 4- Nov. 6 against Boston University, Syracuse and Pittsburgh.
