Women's Tennis Earns Weekend Sweep over Maryland, Marist

Faculty Fellow Jonathan Losos, the Monique and Philip Lehner Professor for the Study of Latin America, cheered on the Harvard women's tennis team this weekend (Athletic Communications).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's tennis team was victorious over Maryland, 6-1, and Marist, 4-0, Saturday at the Murr Center. With the wins, the Crimson improves to 5-4.

In doubles play against Maryland, Harvard was unlucky as the Terrapins won the point with its No. 2 and 3 pairs. Harvard bounced back, however, and was able to sweep Maryland in all six singles matches. June Lee lost in the first set to Arnelle Sullivan, 6-7(8), in the No. 1 position but came back with set scores of 7-6(1), 11-9 to capture the victory. Nikki Kallenberg and Sabrina Xiong tallied their triumphs in two sets with scores of 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively. Annika Ringblom, in the No. 3 position, beat Nataliya Bredikhina with set scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while teammate Erica Oosterhout surpassed Kristina Hovsepyan 4-6,6-2,7-6(2). The Crimson's Amy He rounded out the singles wins with scores of 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.

The evening match against Marist saw a quicker, 4-0 outcome where the Crimson took two-of-three doubles matches. Ringblom and Xiong defeated Karlene Pang and Chloe Lant with a score of 6-3, while Lee and Isabel Jasper topped Melissa Carlay and Lisa Ventimiglia, 6-4.

The Crimson's No. 1, 4 and 6 singles players secured the shutout in two sets apiece. Kallenberg tallied her second singles win of the day against Pang, 6-3, 6-1, while He also recorded her second singles victory by blanking Arielle Shulman, 6-0, 6-2. Danielle Mirda rounded out the Crimson's singles players with her 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Nikki Rohan.

The Crimson travels to Virginia for matches against No. 39 William and Mary on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. and No. 60 Old Dominion on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 11:00 a.m.
