Women's Rugby Claims Cup Consolation at Quinnipiac 7's

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Harvard women's rugby team claimed the Cup Consolation title at the Quinnipiac 7's Saturday at Alumni Rugby Field, topping the Norwich A team in its final game of the day, 17-5.

The Crimson went 3-2 at the eight-team tournament, besting Army and both the Norwich A and B teams, while falling to AIC and Quinnipiac. 

AIC 10, Harvard 7

AIC downed the lone try of the opening half to hold a 5-0 advantage. Caitlin Weigel found the end zone to open the second frame and a successful conversion put the Crimson ahead, 7-5. However, the Yellow Jackets downed the go-ahead try in the final minutes to take the opening game of the day.

Harvard 25, Army 5

Harvard's offense came alive in its second game as Maya Learned, Dalton Youngblood and Aniebiet Abasi posted scores in the opening half to give the Crimson a 15-0 lead. Weigel continued to find the end zone as she registered two-straight tries to open the second half. Army got on the board in the final seconds as Harvard cruised to its first win in the all-time series against the Cadets.

Harvard 22, Norwich B 0

The Harvard attack continued to roll as it dispatched the Norwich B team in its final pool play contest of the day. Youngblood delivered three-straight tries to boost Harvard to a 17-0 advantage at the break. Learned furthered the Crimson lead to 22-0 to open the second half as the score held to send Harvard to the Cup Semifinals.

Quinnipiac 29, Harvard 5

Quinnipiac struck first and a successful conversion put the Bobcats ahead, 7-0. Abasi and Youngblood drove the length of the field to put Harvard within two, but Quinnipiac furthered its lead to 12-5 to end the first half. The Bobcats pulled away in the second frame with a trio of scores to send the Crimson to the Cup Consolation.

Harvard 17, Norwich A 5

Weigel and Youngblood continued the find the end zone as each tabbed tries in the first half to give Harvard the upper hand at 10-0. Norwich made it a one-try game midway through the final stanza, but Claire Collins scored off a penalty and a successful conversion sealed the Cup Consolation title for the Crimson. 

Harvard will stay on the road as it heads to Kennesaw State for the Atlanta 7's April 8-10.
