Women’s Soccer Falls to Wake Forest in NCAA First Round, 3-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Harvard University women's soccer fell at Wake Forest University, 3-0, in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
 
Making its 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament and first appearance since 2016, the Crimson (12-3-1) remained within 1-0 of the Demon Deacons (16-5-0) at halftime before the hosts scored twice within a three-minute span between the 58th and 61st minutes in the second half.
 
Wake Forest's Sofia Rossi opened the scoring in the 12th minute, sending a shot from the edge of the box just under the crossbar behind assists from Shayla Smart and Sophie Faircloth. Hulda Arnarsdottir netted the second goal in the 58th minute off an assist from Jenna Menta, and Smart closed the game's scoring in the 61st minute off an assist from Emily Morris.
 
Among the Crimson's chances, first-year Hannah Bebar won the ball in the attacking third and drove a shot on target in the 32nd minute. Sophomore Taylor Fasnacht fired a powerful shot towards goal that was blocked in the 50th minute before a low-angle chance from close distance went just wide of the post in the 66th minute.

Game Notes

  • Harvard made its 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament and first since 2016, earning its first at-large berth since 2004. The Crimson has made the most NCAA appearances of any Ivy League school.
  • The Crimson earned points in 13 of 16 matches on the season.
  • Harvard moved to 24-6-2 overall since 2019 and to 6-1-0 on the road in 2021.
  • Harvard finished the year 7-1-1 in non-league games, 3-1-0 in away non-conference contests, and 5-1-0 in games decided by three or more goals.
  • Wake Forest took the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
  • For the match, Wake Forest led in shots (8-6), shots on goal (4-2), and corner kicks (4-3).
  • Harvard moved to 9-16-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
