URBANA, Ill. – Competing in a dual match for the first time in 683 days, the Harvard women's tennis team opened its 2022 spring season today on the road against Big Ten foe Illinois. The Crimson fell to the Fighting Illini, who were playing their third match of the season, 7-0.
Harvard, which had not competed since March 7, 2020, had five players make their spring collegiate debut, including first-year
Maxi Duncan, who competed at No. 1 doubles with another first-time Crimson athlete in sophomore
Iveta Daujotaite and No. 1 singles. Other Harvard players making their first dual-match appearance were first-year
Angel You and sophomores
Sany Gawande and
Amy Huang.
Filling out the other spots in the lineup were senior
Rachel Lim and juniors
Sophia Ho and
Mihaela Marculescu.
The Crimson opened the afternoon by dropping the doubles point and then fell in all six singles matches, which provided the final margin.

The Crimson will return home to play host to Quinnipiac at the Murr Center Indoor Courts on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m. Harvard has won four straight home dual matches and was 5-1 at Murr Center in 2020.
