LANCASTER, Pa. – First-year Dom Mata placed third at 184 pounds to pace Harvard University wrestling at the 2022 David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday at F&M's Alumni Sports and Fitness Center.
 
Competing in the final tournament before the start of the dual meet portion of its season, the Crimson totaled 16 wins on the day, including nine bonus-point wins and three falls.
 
Mata placed for the Crimson for the first time this season and notched his second fall of the year. Junior Michael Jaffe reached the quarterfinals at 141 pounds with a major decision, and senior Robert Groves earned a pair of wins at 149 pounds, including a technical fall. Sophomore Cole Bayless (133 pounds) and first-year Jeffrey Crooks (285 pounds) each tallied his first fall of the season.

Harvard Highlights

• First-year Dom Mata placed third at 184 pounds behind a 3-1 record. The No. 4 seed at 184, Mata opened the tournament with a fall in 1:38 over Millersville's Cameron Whisner for his second fall of the season. He followed that with a 4-1 decision over No. 5 seed Jack Wilt of Lehigh. After dropping a major decision to No. 1 seed Sahm Abdulrazzaq of Army West Point, Mata responded with a 23-10 major decision victory over Army's Daniel Lawrence.
• Junior Michael Jaffe reached the quarterfinals at 141 pounds behind a 14-2 major decision over Logan Brown of Army West Point. Jaffe dropped a narrow 2-0 decision to No. 2 seed Matt Kazimir of Columbia in the quarterfinals.
• Senior Robert Groves earned a pair of wins at 149 pounds. He began the tournament with a 5-4 win over West Virginia's Trey Johnson prior to notching a 16-0 technical fall in 4:50 over Brown's Samuel McMonagle in the consolation.
• Other Crimson wrestlers to tally a victory on the day included sophomore Cole Bayless (133 pounds), junior Dillon Murphy (133), sophomore Andrew Pace (149), senior Tucker Ribman (149), sophomore Niko Katsuyoshi (157), junior Trevor Tarsi (157), first-year Alex Whitworth (165), first-year Luke Rada (184), senior Pierce Bausano (197), and first-year Jeffrey Crooks (285).
• Bayless and Crooks each posted his first fall of the season.
• As a team, Harvard totaled 16 wins, including nine bonus-point wins with five major decisions, one technical fall, and three falls.
