CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the first time since 2014, Harvard women's soccer is advancing in the NCAA Tournament after defeating the New Hampshire Wildcats in dominating fashion, 2-0. An all-around team effort contributed to the win tonight, highlighted by the Harvard defense allowing only five shot attempts to the Wildcats.
Playing in her first NCAA Tournament game, senior captain
Jordan Di Verniero did her part with a 9' goal that gave Harvard an early lead.
Hollyn Torres netted the other Crimson goal with a strike from outside the 18 later in the half.
Anna Karpenko cleaned up the only shot she faced in net and the Crimson advanced to the second round with a 2-0 result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Controlling the pace early, Harvard created a few decent scoring chances early on with Di Verniero and Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir putting shots just wide of the net.
- Di Verniero got another chance in the ninth minute and scored off a corner kick set piece. Gunnlaugsdottir fed the senior with a great cross off the corner.
- The Crimson nearly had another goal less than a minute later when Angela Caloia had a shot narrowly deflected by the Wildcat goalkeeper.
- Harvard's offense continued to attack, putting four more shots on goal leading up to the 27' mark. Gunnluagsdottir, Di Verniero (x2) and Hollyn Toress had the shots on goal in that series of chances.
- Torres didn't waste her next chance, as Hannah Griffin found the midfielder in space and saw her wrap a rocket shot around her defender and into the back right corner of the net to put Harvard up 2-0 in the 34' minute.
- Jade Rose, Lara Schenk, Taylor Fasnacht and Di Verniero all played excellent on the backline, allowing only one shot to UNH in the first 45 minutes. Harvard took the 2-0 lead that it built into the halftime break.
- Harvard's pressure continued in the second half as the team continually worked the ball deep into the Wildcat zone with great runs up the sideline.
- The Crimson's speed created four corner kick opportunities in the first 15' of the half.
- Anna Karpenko made her lone save 60' into the action, grabbing a long shot out of the air.
- Ainsley Ahmadian had a good look blocked by the crossbar in the 61' as Harvard offense kept pushing and created two more shots on goal in regulation.
- The defense stood strong for the rest of the game, as Harvard ran onto the second round with a 2-0 win over New Hampshire.
