DETROIT, Mich. – Harvard University wrestling sophomore 165-pounder
Philip Conigliaro won a pair of matches before his NCAA run concluded in the round of 12 at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on day two on Friday at Little Caesars Arena.
A native of Dedham, Mass., and the No. 8 seed at 165, Conigliaro earned victories over No. 26 seed Lucas Revano of Penn and No. 15 seed Austin Yant of Northern Iowa before dropping a 6-2 decision to No. 3 seed Alex Marinelli of Iowa in the blood round.
Conigliaro – the 2022 EIWA champion at 165 pounds – went 3-2 on the weekend, winning three of his first four bouts. He closed the year with a 22-6 overall record and a 14-6 record against opponents in the NCAA field. Entering NCAAs ranked No. 2 in the RPI and No. 9 in the Coaches' Rankings, Conigliaro won 11 of his final 13 matches on the year.
Opening competition on Friday, Conigliaro tallied a 5-3 win over the Quakers' Revano in the consolation bracket. Conigliaro held leads of 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 after the second period before scoring a takedown in the final stanza to secure the win.
In his final match of the day's first session, Conigliaro topped the Panthers' Yant to advance to the night session. Conigliaro held a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first, gained a 4-2 edge through two periods, and outscored Yant 3-0 in the final stanza en route to the victory.
Closing out his time at the championships, Conigliaro fell to the Hawkeyes' Marinelli, 6-2, in the round of 12, coming within one win of earning All-America status. Conigliaro scored a pair of escapes in the third period to pull within 3-1 and 5-2 before Marinelli held on for the win.
