CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 71 Harvard women's tennis team (8-7) earned a hard-fought win over Massachusetts today, 4-3.
The match started outdoors at the Beren Tennis Center for the first time this spring, before moving indoors to the Murr Tennis Center because of inclement weather.
The Crimson dropped two of three doubles matches to start the match.
Maxi Duncan and
Holly Fischer earned a 6-3 win at the first position. At the No. 2 spot,
Angel You and
Iveta Daujotaite were narrowly edged in a tiebreak, 7-6(4), giving the Minutewomen (9-4, 3-0 A10) a 1-0 advantage heading into the singles action.
The singles contests proved crucial for the Crimson, winning four of six matchups to earn the 4-3 victory.
Angel You was leading 2-0 over Vitoria Okuyama of UMass before the match was retired at the No. 5 spot, earning a point for the Crimson.
Sany Gawande and
Maxi Duncan earned straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 2 respectively. Gawande earned a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Duncan notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Holly Fischer earned the clinching point for Harvard at the No. 3 spot, battling to a three-set victory (6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3) over Mariya Krasakova of UMass to give Harvard the victory.
