CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Squash was well-represented at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, with four former and current athletes competing in the recently completed singles competition.
On the women's side, Amanda Sobhy '15 and senior
Marina Stefanoni breezed through their Round of 16 matches as both posted 3-0 decisions. Sobhy dispatched Margot Prow, 11-2, 11-3, 11-3, while Stefanoni defeated Winifer Bonilla, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4.
In the quarterfinals, Sobhy cruised by Luz Sarahi Dominguez, 11-5, 11-4, 11-1, but Stefanoni found herself in a battle. The Darien, Connecticut, native dropped two of the first three sets (8-11, 11-8, 5-11), but rallied in the fourth and fifth (11-9, 11-8) to pick up the victory over Nicole Bunyan.
With the quarterfinals behind them, Sobhy and Stefanoni were now set to face each other in the semifinal round. Sobhy, a four-time CSA national champion, wasted little time, notching an 11-5 win in the first set and followed it with a pair of 11-6 scores to advance to the final.
In the championship match, Sobhy put herself in a position to secure gold, taking the first two sets from Olivia Fiechter, 11-4, 11-6. Fiechter, however, stormed back and claimed the final three frames (11-6, 11-5, 11-6), forcing Sobhy to bring back a silver medal to the States.
On the men's side of the action, Timothy Brownell '20 opened the competition with a familiar face in
George Crowne '23. Brownell ultimately defeated Crowne in the Round of 16 in three sets, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9, to advance to the quarterfinals. His time in the singles bracket, however, was short-lived as Brownell lost a closely contested match to Cesar Salazar, 10-12, 9-11, 9-11.
The squash action is ongoing in Santiago with mixed doubles taking the spotlight. Sobhy, Brownell and Crowne are all participating.
