Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Hem, Francioli Lead The Way as Women's Lacrosse Earns 12-10 Win at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.  – Junior Callie Hem had a game-high six points (two goals, four assists), Riley Campbell added four goals and sophomore goalie Lizzie Francioli made a season high 11 saves to help Harvard women's lacrosse earn a 12-10 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday afternoon (March 14).

First-year Charlotte Hodgson added three goals, and Shea Jenkins scored her first collegiate goal, adding a team high six draw controls to help Harvard earn its second straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard never trailed in the contest, and Jenkins helped the Crimson get things rolling right after the opening whistle, cutting through the middle after an opening draw control and firing a shot into the net just 12 seconds into the game.
  • Hem had the first of her four assists with a great high low pass to Hodgson for a quick flip into the net at 10:37 of the first quarter.
  • Harvard added two more goals from Riley Campbell in the final five minutes of the frame to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes. Campbell's second goal came with less than one second to play in the period, cutting from right to left and firing a low shot into the net.
  • In a defensive second quarter, each team scored just one goal, with Hodgson potting her second of the game at 6:43 in response to a Coastal Carolina goal, shooting over three defenders and finding the net to make it 5-3, the score after 30 minutes.
  • Things opened up in the third quarter, as the Crimson scored five goals and took a 10-6 lead. Barkate (10:08) and Campbell (8:07) helped Harvard trade goals with the Chanticleers in the early stages of the third quarter.
  • Then Callie Hem scored twice in a span of just over a minute to help Harvard jump out to a four-goal lead. Caroline Mullahy found Hem cutting just in front of the goal crease and she found the net on the near side at 6:29. On the next possession, Hem cut to the middle and fired a low shot from 10 yards out past Claire Martell at 5:18 to make it 9-5.
  • Campbell scored her fourth goal of the afternoon at 3:13 on a nice run from the right side to give Harvard a 10-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • A late Coastal Carolina run threatened to close the four-goal gap. While Charlotte Hodgson scored her third of the day with 10:14 remaining, the Chanticleers cut the lead to 11-10 with 4:31 to play. But Harvard responded with a big draw control – by Hodgson – which was followed by Caroline Mullahy's free position goal with 3:30 to go.
  • In the final minute, Francioli sealed the win with a stick save and ground ball, keeping Harvard in front for good.
