Three Advance to Semifinals at CSA Individual Championships for Women’s Squash

PHILADELPHIA, PA – In the opening day of the 2023 CSA Individual Championships, No. 1 Harvard Women's Squash were represented by seven players across four of the divisions.  Three Crimson players will advance to the semifinals of their draws and another to the consolation semifinals. 
 
Marina Stefanoni leads the charge for the Crimson, advancing to the semifinals of the Ramsay Cup main draw.  In her first-round matchup, after dropping the first game to Elisabeth Ross (Yale), Stefanoni stormed back to take the next three games and advance to the quarterfinals.  The junior then cruised into the semifinals, sweeping her next opponent 11-9, 11-4, 11-8.  Stefanoni will take on the three-seed Chan Sin Yuk (Columbia) with the opportunity to punch her ticket to the finals at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. 
 
In the Holleran Cup, Serena Daniel and Brecon Welch advanced to the semifinals in the South Division and West Division, respectively. 
 
Daniel dominated through both her matches today, sweeping either opponents.  Against the 15th seed out of Franklin and Marshall, Daniel only dropped 11 points, outscoring her opponent 11-6, 11-2, 11-3.  To advance to the semifinals, the junior registered another 3-0 win over seven-seed Alysa Ali (Cornell).  Daniel will face off against No. 6 India Stephenson (Princeton) tomorrow at 11:20 a.m. in the semifinals. 
 
Welch showed her resilience today, powering through two five game matches to punch her ticket to the semifinals.  Against No. 12 Amal Izhar, Welch was behind 2-1 before taking the final two games 11-9, 11-4 to move on.  In the quarterfinals Welch dropped the first two games and then snuck out two 13-11 and 14-12 games to tie the match up.  She took the final game 11-6 to advance to the semifinals where she will face No. 9 Kara Lincou (Trinity) at 1:00 p.m.
 
Despite dropping her first match in the round of 16 of the Holleran Cup South Division, Binney Huffman won her consolation match to move on to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.  Competing in the Ramsay Cup and the Holleran Cup North Division both Saran Gregory-Nghiem and Amira Singh picked up first round 3-0 wins today.
