Women's Lacrosse Earns First Ivy Win of Year, Defeating Dartmouth 13-11

HANOVER, N.H. – A fast start and key late defense for the Crimson, aided by big games from Riley Campbell (four goals, assist) and Maddie Barkate (two goals, three assists, eight draw controls) helped Harvard Women's Lacrosse (4-5, 1-2 Ivy) earn a 13-11 road win at Dartmouth (2-7, 0-3 Ivy) on Saturday afternoon (April 1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After falling behind 1-0, Harvard scored five straight goals and kept the Big Green off the scoreboard for a span of 18:37 for much of the first and second quarters.
  • Campbell scored three times during the five-goal run, getting Harvard on the scoreboard with a great cut to the middle, shooting while falling down and beating the Dartmouth goaltender at 10:56.
  • First-year Charlotte Hodgson took a great pass from Kate Gilliam and scored at 10:35 on Harvard's next possession.
  • Later in the quarter, Campbell beat two defenders on the left side and first a long shot into the net at 4:36.
  • Then Ilana Kofman scored in the final minute, making a great run to the net and scoring off a pass from Caroline Mullahy at :45.
  • Campbell finished the run with a high low shot right in front of the goal crease at 10:57 of the second quarter to make it 5-1/
  • Maddie Barkate scored two more goals later in the quarter, the first on an unsettled break off a Dartmouth turnover at 6:43 and the second on another great setup by Mullahy to make it 7-2 with 3:25 to go in the half. Dartmouth would score two goals in the final minutes to make it 7-4 at the break.
  • Harvard tallied five more goals in the third quarter to take a commanding seven goal lead.
  • Mullahy scored her first of the game, cutting in front of the net for a score at 14:06.
  • Campbell then scored her fourth of the afternoon taking a pass from Barkate and cutting right down the middle for a goal at 10:23.
  • Hannah Shiels scored on a quick shot moving left to right at 9:34 to make it 10-5.
  • Charley Meier scored her first of the day off a great pass from Kofman at 4:11.
  • Then Callie Hem notched her first goal of the day on a run from 30 yards out to make it 12-5 with 3:25 to go in the third quarter.
  • Harvard survived a late run by the Big Green which saw Dartmouth pull within two goals, with Hem helping keep Dartmouth at arms length with a goal at :58 to put Harvard in front 13-10.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Harvard outshot Dartmouth 30-22 for the day and had a 25-15 edge in shots on goal.
  • Goalie Lizzie Francioli earned the win, making two saves in 50-plus minutes of play.
  • Charlotte Hodgson led Harvard with five ground balls and three caused turnovers (adding two draw controls) in a standout defensive effort.
