PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore attack
Caroline Mullahy notched a career high six points (three goals, three assists), and first-year
Charlotte Hodgson added three goals, but Harvard Women's Lacrosse (8-6, 4-3 Ivy League) fell to Princeton (7-8, 4-3 Ivy League) on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.
Junior
Callie Hem had two goals and an assist, and
Maddie Barkate added a pair of goals to go along with 12 draw controls. Junior goalie
Chloe Provenzano made six saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Princeton opened up the game with a four goal run, but Harvard responded with five straight goals to close out the first quarter to take a 5-4 lead.
- Harvard scored on its first offensive possession, as Hem flipped a pass to first-year Charlotte Hodson, who fired a shot in from distance at 9:50 to make it a 4-1 game.
- Caroline Mullahy made a great move from the side of the net, cutting in front of the crease and flipping a high shot in at 6:24.
- Then Hodgson scored her second of the frame to make it 4-3, a well-placed bounce shot at 4:59.
- With Harvard on a woman-up, the Crimson's Maddie Barkate forced a turnover at midfield found Hem on a break, and she finished the play with another goal at 2:16.
- With under a minute to play in the frame, Barkate scored from in close with :35 on the clock to give Harvard its first lead at 5-4.
- Hem opened up the second quarter with a free position goal to extend the Harvard run and make it 6-4.
- The Crimson survived a two player-down situation later in the frame as part of a great defensive stretch to keep the Tigers off the board for over 19 minutes.
- A three goal run for Princeton helped the Tigers regain the lead at 7-6 with 5:56 to go in the half.
- But Harvard answered, as Riley Campbell scored her first of the day on a great move from right to left to open up space for a low shot into the net at 4:58 to make it 7-7, which was the score at the half.
- Princeton opened the second half on a three goal run, but Harvard answered, as Hodgson scored her third of the afternoon from 15 feet out off a great pass from Mullahy from behind the cage at 9:44 to make it 10-8 Tigers.
- After a three goal run by Princeton, Ilana Kofman scored on a free position shot with 3:40 to go in the quarter to make it 13-9.
- Harvard responded to another Princeton goal with Mullahy finding Barkate alone in front for a goal with 1:38 to go in the frame.
- The Crimson kept it close in the fourth quarter, as Hannah Shiels scored off another great pass from Mullahy from X to make it 15-11 at 7:58 of the fourth quarter.
- Mullahy added two late goals at 6:10 and 2:45 to round out her stellar day, but Harvard could get no closer than four in the final frame.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS
- Harvard's six-game winning streak was snapped – its best winning streak since the 1996 season (won seven in a row that year).
- Harvard had 27 shots on goal in the game, outshooting Princeton 27-23.
- The Crimson finished the day 19-for-19 on clears.
- Harvard clinched a berth into the 2023 Ivy League Tournament on Saturday, making its first back-to-back appearances in the league tournament since 2016-2017.
