Women's Soccer Falls to St. John's in Queens, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer had a close game tonight in a non-conference battle with the formidable St. John's Red Storm, ultimately succumbing to a narrow 3-4 defeat.

The match kicked off with an electrifying display of skill as Ólöf Kristinsdóttir netted two goals in a dazzling display of precision within the opening half, both within a mere five-minute span. However, St. Johns answered the 2-0 deficit by scoring two. Harvard fell into penalty trouble and allowed a penalty kick for the Red Storm. 

As the first half unfolded, Harvard found themselves entangled in penalty trouble, conceding a crucial penalty kick to the relentless Red Storm, who seized the opportunity to level the score.

The second half began, and DelPico stole the ball from the goalkeeper dribbling the ball, and scored from within the box. St. Johns was able to tally another goal within the box in the mid-second half. 

Despite 17 shots on goal compared to St. John's 8, Harvard couldn't find a plan for the rest of the match, resulting in a 3-4 loss. 
 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Olöf Kristinsdóttir tapped in her young career's first and second goals within five minutes in the late first half. Both came off assists close to the net from Josephine Hasbo and Taylor Fasnacht.

  • After being up 2-0, the Harvard defense let up multiple opportunities close to the net, resulting in two opposing goals.

  • A Harvard penalty resulted in a PK opportunity for St. Johns, which it converted. 3-2 going into the second half.

  • DelPico scores from within the box on an easy takeaway from the keeper.
     

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Harvard outshot the Red Storm, posting 17 shots on goal compared to St. John's 8.

  • The Crimson is now 2-1 vs. St. John's all time.

  • Ólöf Kristinsdóttir scored two goals in the match for Harvard. 

UP NEXT 

Harvard women's soccer moves into the Ivy League portion of its schedule after its non-conference matches. The Crimson will kick off league play with a massive tilt against rival, Brown. Harvard and the Bears will battle it on the pitch at Jordan Field on Ivy League opening weekend next Saturday, September 23 (7 PM).
