CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 39 Harvard women's tennis (18-2, 4-0 Ivy) won its 14
th straight match and remained undefeated in Ivy action by defeating No. 43 Columbia, 4-1. With the victory, the Crimson improve to 18-2 on the year, marking the most wins for Harvard with
Traci Green at the helm and since the 2005-06 season.
How it Happened
Columbia made the first strike this afternoon, taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
The Crimson quickly went to work in singles as
Charlotte Owensby breezed to a straight set, 6-0, 6-3, win at the No. 3 position.
Maxi Duncan followed closely behind, downing Gayathri Krishnan (Columbia) at the No. 4 spot. After pulling out a first set thriller in tiebreakers, the junior put up a 6-3 decision in the second to push the Crimson into the lead.
Sany Gawande at the No. 6 spot and
Holly Fischer at the top spot inched closer to wins as the match carried on and the two teams were battling at each position. Gawande delivered first by holding on, 8-6, in the second set tiebreakers to put the Crimson within a point of clinching.
Moments later, Fischer completed her three-set comeback, defeating Anna Zhang (Columbia), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Harvard Highlights
- The Crimson continue its historic 14-match win streak with their victory this afternoon. Harvard's 18th win of the year marks the most for the program since the 2005-06 season.
- While moving to 4-0 in Ivy play, the Crimson stay in sole possession of the top spot in the conference as the only remaining undefeated team.
- Holly Fischer moved to an impressive 17-3 on the year by picking up the clinching victory this afternoon over Anna Zhang (Columbia).
- Charlotte Owensby dropped the least number of games of any Crimson player as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
- Sany Gawande completed a 2-0 singles weekend in her final home matches of her career while improving to 10-5 on the season.
- With the victory, the Crimson improve to 31-9 all-time against the Lions and picked up its second straight win over the foe.
