PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No. 1 Harvard women's squash suffered its first loss of the season this afternoon after falling to the No. 3 Penn Quakers. The Crimson (7-1, 4-1 Ivy) took three match wins but it was not enough to get past the Quakers (12-1, 4-1 Ivy), who earned a key Ivy League result over the Crimson.
How it Happened
The Crimson and the Quakers squared off this afternoon in Philadelphia in what was a battle of two of the top three teams in the College Squash Association. With the Ivy League title up for grabs, the match held major implications in terms of the conference standings.
Caroline Fouts battled in her match at the top of the ladder but could not rally past an early deficit, falling 0-3 to her Penn adversary.
Lucie Stefanoni and
Saran Nghiem posted wins at twos and threes, respectively. Stefanoni withstood a five-set thriller to earn her win, coming away with a swift 11-4 win in the decisive fifth game. Nghiem rallied after a first game defeat to secure three consecutive game wins and take the victory at threes.
Ocean Ma and
Ona Blasco Puig each fell in their matches at fours and fives. Puig pushed the match to five games, where she came out on the wrong side of a tightly contested match.
Dixon Hill remained unbeaten individually, taking a 3-1 win in the sixes match. Hill overcame a first game loss to rally and win three consecutive games and earn her eighth win of the season.
Penn captures all three matches at sevens, eights and nines to secure a 6-3 win.
Jomana Ahmed came close in her match at sevens but fell in a five-set marathon.
