Women’s Lacrosse Tripped Up By No. 17 Boston College

BOSTON, Mass. – Harvard women's lacrosse made the short trip across town tonight to battle the No. 17 Boston College Eagles at Alumni Stadium in a cross-town showdown. The Crimson (1-5, 0-2 Ivy) could not top the No. 17 Eagles (4-4, 3-2 ACC), who used a hot start to secure a 15-5 win. Harvard rebounded and put together a solid performance in the final three quarters, but could not mount a comeback in the loss to the Eagles.

Emma Barkauskas made 12 saves guarding the Crimson cage in her first career start while first-year Lexie Koch led the offense with two goals on the day.

How it Happened

The Eagles came out of the gates flying, collecting seven goals in the first quarter to jump out to the early lead. Harvard dominated in draw controls during the opening frame, winning seven of the first eight in the quarter, but could not capitalize on its chances as Boston College held a 7-0 lead after 15 minutes of action.

Harvard began to dig in after the opening 15, beginning a long defensive stand in the second quarter. The Crimson forced five Eagle turnovers – one of which was caused by Hayla Dora – in the quarter while Barkauskas backed up the effort with two saves. BC managed to get just one goal on the board in the frame, but Grace Mullahy matched with Harvard's first goal of the game and her 10th tally of the season.

Despite the defensive stand, BC would head into halftime holding a 8-1 lead over the Crimson.

Lexie Koch scored her first career goal to open the second half scoring for Harvard. The rookie dodged around her defender on the wing before pocketing a low bounce shot into the back of the cage. The Eagles stormed back, using a 4-0 scoring run at the end of the quarter to build a 12-2 lead heading into the final frame.

The Crimson went on a mini scoring run in the final quarter, posting back-to-back goals from Tori Balser and Cecelia Batchelder to cut into the Eagle lead. BC responded with three of the final four goals to seal the win in the crosstown matchup. Koch added her second goal – a woman-up goal – in the middle of the run to record her first career multi-goal game.

Harvard falls to 1-5 with the result.
