CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer opened its 2026 campaign tonight by welcoming the Stony Brook Seawolves to Jordan Field for an evening clash. The season opener was spoiled by the Seawolves (2-0-1, 0-0-0 CAA) who earned a 2-1 result over the Crimson (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Ivy).
Brooke Huleatt scored the lone Crimson goal in her collegiate debut, as Harvard fell just short in a fast-paced, hard-fought contest.
How it Happened
- Harvard created the first scoring chance, just two minutes into the game. Jasmine Leshnick capitalized on a Seawolves turnover, taking possession and making a run into the box, getting a shot off that was saved by the opposing keeper.
- Stony Brook countered with pressure, which resulted in several deep runs, but Harvard's back line was up to the task early in the contest.
- The Crimson mounted a few more runs of its own that resulted in a pair of corner kicks and blocked shots off the boots of Ólöf Kristinsdóttir and Elsa Santos Lopez in the 15th minute.
- After Stony Brook calmed play down, the Seawolves made a run deep into the Harvard end. Seawolves forward, Emily Lemke, carried the ball into the middle of the 18, where she became tangled up with the Harvard defense and was awarded a penalty kick. Lemke converted the opportunity from the stripe – despite Harvard goalkeeper Nikki Bidun getting a hand on the shot – to put Stony Brook in front, 1-0.
- Just four minutes later, Lemke struck again, slotting a shot into the bottom right half of the net off a crossing pass. The goal put the Sea Wolves up, 2-0, 21' into the match.
- Stony Brook had two more shots in the next ten minutes, one missing left of the net and the other being saved by Bidun.
- After making a series of substitutions, Harvard began to maintain possession and drive into the attacking third. First-year, Molly Vana, had a trio of looks, firing off two shots that were blocked and one more that was saved by the Stony Brook keeper. Fellow first-year Lou Ruffien also had an attempt blocked in the ensuing sequence.
- The Crimson's best chance of the half came in the final minute when Caroline Studebaker raced past her mark and put a shot from 10 yards out just over the cross bar. The half would end with the Seawolves still holding a 2-0 lead. Harvard led in shots (8-4) and corners (6-1) but entered the second half facing a deficit.
- The second half opened with Harvard dominating possession. The Crimson created a chance in the first minute after the break, when first-year Camila Reinaldo put a shot over the crossbar. Harvard had four more shots in the first seven minutes – one from first-year Brooke Huleatt, Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez, Kristinsdóttir and Jasmine Leshnick – saved by the Stony Brook goalkeeper in a flurry of opportunities for Harvard.
- Harvard kept pushing into the attacking third, winning 10 corner kicks in the opening 25 minutes of the half. The Seawolves held off all the Crimson's chances until the team finally broke through in the 82nd minute.
- After subbing back in with 10 minutes to go, Huleatt collected the ball on the wing, cut back into the middle of the field and cracked off a shot from 12 yards into the back of the net. Huleatt's strike – her first career goal in her collegiate debut – made the score 2-1 in favor of Stony Brook with eight minutes to play.
- The Crimson nearly struck again in the 87th minute when Kristinsdóttir had an open shot in the six-yard box saved. The rebound dropped on to the foot of Ruffien, who took a shot that sailed just wide of the net.
- One last chance was created in the final minute when Huleatt won a corner with only 15 seconds left. The ball was played into the 18 and kicked around before if landed in front of Santos Lopez, who put a solid attempt wide of the net as time expired.
- The Crimson fell, 2-1, in the season opener to fall to 0-1-0 on the season.
