No. 17 Harvard Dominates Wagner; Splits Sunday Action

Crimson cap off Bruno Classic with an 18-6 win over the Seahawks.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 17 Harvard men's water polo team earned a split for the second straight day; falling to No. 11 Pacific 12-11 in the opener and dominating Wagner 18-6 in the nightcap. The Crimson are through the season's opening weekend at 2-2 after competing in the Bruno Classic at Blodgett Pool.

Pacific scored first and never trailed. Harvard tied the game at 3-3 and the two sides traded goals before the Tigers went back in front at 6-5 before halftime and never looked back.
 
Trailing 12-9, Crimson junior Lukas Peabody (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Jacob Tsotadze (Menlo Park, Calif.) got the home side back within a goal, but Pacific held the ball for the final 16 seconds after Tsotadze's scored and secured the victory.

Three Crimson players got on the scoresheet twice, including Tsotadze. Senior Vilas Sogaard-Srikrishnan (Greenwich, Conn.) netted a pair of goals, including one on a penalty shot, and first-year Clay Carrington (Menlo Park, Calif.) added two of his own. Sophomore Connor Kim (Los Angeles, Calif.) dished out a team-high three assists and freshman goalie Jonas Ransford (Newport Beach, Calif.) notched nine saves.

In game two, senior Oliver Price (La Jolla, Calif.) got the start in net and shutout Wagner through the first quarter. The Crimson grew its lead to 6-0 before the Seahawks got on the board.

Senior Jack Burghardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and first-years Carrington and Rigby Snapp (Ventura, Calif.) all four goals in the game. Carrington and Sogaard-Srikrishnan tied for the game-high in assists with three. Price finished the game with nine saves and two steals.
 
Pacific 12, Harvard 11
·       Down 5-4, Harvard pulled even for the first time in the game on a penalty shot by Sogaard-Srikrishnan; his second goal of the game.
·       Pacific took a 6-5 lead into halftime and built a three-goal lead early in the third quarter with the first two goals of the period.
·       Harvard got a stop on a Pacific breakaway and countered with a quick goal from Felix Pal on the left side off a feed from Dean Strauser to make it a 9-8 deficit.
·       Peabody scored on his third shot of a late possession to bring the Crimson back within two at 12-10.
·       Tsotadze netted his second of the game with just 16 seconds left in the game, but the Tigers retained possession to grind out the rest of the clock.
  
Harvard 18, Wagner 6
·       Less than two minutes into the game a Carrington goal made it 3-0 Harvard and forced a quick Wagner timeout.
·       Harvard held an opponent scoreless for an entire quarter for the first time this season and led 4-0 after one.
·       The Crimson pushed its lead to 6-0 on Snapp's first goal and he added another, in response to Wagner's first goal of the game, to make it 7-1.
·       Carrington notched a hat trick with more than two minutes still remaining before the half.
·      Burghardt scored three goals and assisted on another in a 6-1 run between the second and third quarters to make it 13-3 Harvard.

The Bruno Classic wraps up today at 2:30 p.m. when the Crimson host Wagner. Harvard heads out west next weekend for the Aggie Roundup in Davis, Calif.; hosted by UC Davis. The Crimson open the tournament against California on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
