Women's Soccer Outlasts BU, 2-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Harvard women's soccer (2-2-1, 0-0-0 Ivy) traveled just two miles down the road this evening to take on crosstown rival Boston University (2-4-0, 0-0-0 Patriot).

Two first-half penalty kicks gave the Crimson an early cushion before Harvard weathered a second-half push from the Terriers to secure a 2-1 victory. Harvard has now taken down its in-state foe in three consecutive meetings.

How it Happened

  • Maintaining its trend of applying early pressure, the Crimson went on the attack from the opening whistle, as Brooke Huleatt put a shot on goal in the second minute of action.
  • Harvard's early pressure paid off in the 19th minute, when a BU handball on a Crimson corner sent Ólöf Kristinsdóttir to the penalty spot. Kristinsdóttir capitalized on the opportunity, converting for Harvard's first goal of the night and her third of the season.
  • The Crimson controlled the opening 45 minutes, keeping the Terriers without a shot on goal.
  • Before the half ended, Molly Vana was fouled during a breakaway in the 44th minute, sending her to the penalty spot. The BU goalkeeper initially stopped Vana's attempt, but the ball ultimately trickled past the line to give the Crimson a two-goal advantage heading into halftime.
  • The Terriers flipped the pressure after halftime, generating six shots and seven corner kicks in the second half.
  • BU finally broke through in the 83rd minute, as Olivia Avellar found the back of the net to cut the Crimson lead in half and set up a tense finish.
  • Minutes later, BU created another dangerous chance, but Nicole Bidun got a hand to the shot, deflecting it off the crossbar and away from goal to preserve the Harvard lead.

Harvard Highlights

  • Ólöf Kristinsdóttir and Molly Vana each converted a penalty kick in the victory.
  • With her third goal of the season, Kristinsdóttir moved into a tie with Brooke Huleatt for the team lead with six points. Vana brought her season point total to five with two goals and an assist.
  • The Crimson backline held the Terriers without a shot on goal in the first half.
  • Harvard held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Nicole Bidun faced both BU shots on target, allowing one goal while making a key save late in the second half.
  • Danicka Miller and Írena Héðinsdóttir Gonzalez played all 90 minutes for the Crimson.
  • Harvard improved to 18-9-6 all-time against the Terriers and has won each of the last three meetings.
