Katie Shields

Katie Shields ’06 is in her third year as assistant coachof women’s soccer after being hired on April 1, 2007.

A standout goalkeeper for four years for the Crimson, Shields isa valuable asset for the program's goalkeepers and is in charge ofrecruiting responsibilities as well.  In 2008, Shields helpedthe Crimson to a 10-3-5 record, an Ivy League title and a berth inthe NCAA tournament as Harvard allowed two goals or more on onlythree occasions all season.  The Crimson also recorded fourshutouts and had two goalkeepers, Lauren Mann and Laura Dale,finish among the top 10 in the Ivy League in goals-against averageand save percentage. Mann earned All-Ivy honorabe mention.

During her first season on the coaching staff in 2007, Shieldshelped mentor Mann to second team All-Ivy League honors.  

Shields, a native of Dana Point, Calif., was a four-year starterfor the Crimson and turned in one of the top careers in programhistory before graduating with a degree in government. In goal,Shields was a four-time All-Ivy League selection, including firstteam accolades following her senior campaign of 2005. That sameyear, she was selected to the NCSAA First Team All-Northeast Regionafter allowing just eight goals, the second-lowest total in schoolhistory.

Her 11 total shutouts recorded in 2005 rank as the most in asingle season in Harvard history and gave her 18 for her career. Inthe Crimson annals, Shields concluded her career ranked secondall-time in minutes played (4,145), third in total saves (272) andfifth in save percentage (.863). Shields also helped the team to anappearance in the 2004 NCAA Championships. Her .909 career savepercentage ranks third all-time in Division I women's soccer.

Prior to her return to Harvard, Shields held assistant coachingjobs at Arizona State and UC Irvine as the goalkeeper coach andtravel coordinator.
