Catherine Benson

Catherine Benson joined Harvard Women's Rugby as an assistant coach in October 2025 and enters her second year with the program in 2026–27. A decorated international player and experienced professional, Benson brings elite-level knowledge from her time competing for the USA Women's Eagles, Life West Rugby, and the Sale Sharks in England's Premiership.

In 2025-26, the Crimson captured a historic three-peat winning the NIRA National Championship for the third consecutive 15s season behind a 22-19 victory over Lindenwood. The Crimson won the Ivy title during both the 15s and 7s season seasons, while placing third in the nation at the CRAA 7s National Championships in the spring.

One of the most capped players in USA Women's Rugby history, Benson made her national team debut in 2015 against England under then–USA Head Coach Pete Steinberg. She went on to represent the United States at the 2017, 2021, and 2025 Rugby World Cups, establishing herself as a leader and consistent force in the Eagles' front row. Domestically, she helped Life West Rugby capture three national championships across multiple divisions before moving to England to play four seasons with the Sale Sharks in the Allianz Premiership Women's Rugby, one of the top professional leagues in the world.

Originally from Buffalo, N.Y., Benson first discovered rugby through her father, who introduced her to the sport after years of playing himself. A standout cross-country athlete, she transitioned to rugby while at Penn State University, where she became one of the premier collegiate players in the country. During her time with the Nittany Lions, she helped lead the team to five national championships across fifteens and sevens, earning selections to the USA U20 team (2012) and the Collegiate All-Americans (2014, 2015).

In her role with the Crimson, Benson assists in all aspects of coaching, player development, and recruitment, bringing her international experience and technical expertise to support Harvard's continued growth and success.
