Michael O'Connor has been Harvard's head coach of coed and women's sailing, and the university's director of sailing since 1997. The 2026-27 campaign will mark his 30th at the helm of the program. O'Connor, additionally, had The James Herscot '58 Coach of Excellence added to his title in Sept. 2026, after leading the Crimson to an outstanding season in 2025-26. The addition to his title is for the 2026-27 academic year.
O'Connor has coached Harvard to five national titles in the last four seasons as the Crimson won the 2023 ICSA Open Team Racing National Championship in New York, the 2024 ICSA Open Fleet Racing National Championship on the Charles River, the 2025 ICSA Open Team Racing regatta in Rhode Island, and two championships in 2025-26 (2025 ICSA Match Race National Championship, 2026 ICSA Open Team Race National Championship). On the women's side, O'Connor has guided Harvard to three straight top-5 finishes at the ICSA Women's Team Racing Championship (2024 - 5th, 2025 - 3rd, 2026 - 4th), including its best performance in program history in 2025. Harvard, meanwhile, has finished in the top-7 at the ICSA Fleet Racing National Championship five straight seasons, including two consecutive third-place efforts (2025, 2026).
In 2025-26 alone, the Crimson won the 2025 ICSA Match Race National Championship before capturing its second straight – and third in four seasons – ICSA Open Team Race National Championship. Harvard also registered impressive performances at three other team national regattas (3rd at women's fleet race, 4th at women's team race, 7th at open fleet race), while watching Robby Meek win the ICSA Open Singlehanded National Championship and Kate Danielson and Sophia Montgomery '26 coming in third and ninth place, respectively, at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship. The showings all led the Crimson to receiving for the first time since 2005, the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy, which is awarded to the best all-around college sailing team. O'Connor also helped Justin Callahan '26 become the first sailor in program history to be a two-time ICSA College Sailor of the Year (2025, 2026).
O'Connor was named the 2024 Ivy League Women's Sailing Coach of the Year, while mentoring Lachlain McGranahan and Marbella Marlo as they each collected two of the top sailing postseason awards. McGranahan was named the ICSA College Sailor of the Year to become the first Crimson athlete in 20 years to garner the honor. Marlo, meanwhile, became the first Harvard sailor to earn Mitchell M. Brindley Crew-of-the-Year accolades. As if that was not impressive enough, O'Connor then helped Justin Callahan capture ICSA College Sailor-of-the-Year accolades in 2025, marking the first time a Crimson athlete has received the Everett Morris Memorial Trophy in consecutive seasons since 2003-04.
The 2021-22 season saw O'Connor's Crimson continue to perform as one of the top program's in the country. The team returned to the ICSA Team Race National Championship for the first time since 2009, and to the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship for the first time since 2015. On the women's side, Harvard participated in the first-ever Women's Team Race National Championship, while also taking part in the Women's Fleet Racing National Championship where the team placed fourth.
O'Connor was named the NEISA Coach of the Year for the 2019-20 season, after guiding the Crimson to 15 top-5 finishes through the fall and shortened spring season.
Since taking over the Crimson program, O'Connor has helped Harvard win national coed team race championships in 2002, 2003, 2023, 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2003 and 2024 national coed fleet race championships. O'Connor also led the Crimson to the women's national fleet racing title in 2005. His teams won five straight Leonard M. Fowle Trophies for the top team performance in the six ICSA North American Championships from 2001-05. It marked the second-longest Fowle Trophy run in history, trailing only Navy's streak of seven Fowle Trophies from 1977 to 1983.
Individually, O'Connor has guided Harvard sailors and crew members to seven national sailor-of-the-year awards, eight NEISA singlehanded championships, including seven of the ICSA variety, and 98 All-America honors.
Since the inception of the ICSA All-Academic Team in 2006, O'Connor's student-athletes have been honored 97 times (entering 2026-27) with the award that recognizes those who have distinguished themselves in national and intersectional competition, while maintaining the highest levels of academic standards. Additionally, 37 members of his teams have earned Academic All-Ivy League honors.
Regionally, Harvard has also won 17 New England titles under O'Connor's tutelage, including eight singlehanded championships, and earned five sailor of year honors.
In 2018, O'Connor coached Kevin Coakley into the ICSA Hall of Fame.
O'Connor has been affiliated with the Crimson sailing program since 1989, when he joined the staff as a part-time assistant to former head coach Mike Horn. He was promoted to full-time assistant coach and manager of the Harvard Sailing Center in 1990, before assuming his current position in 1997.
O'Connor has a long and distinguished record of commitment with the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association, and he currently represents that organization on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association All-America Committee. In 2013, he was presented with the ICSA's Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service as a Sailing Professional and inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame.
His experience in competitive sailing dates to his high school days, when he played a key role in the introduction of the sport at Boston College High School. O'Connor went on to spend four years as a member of Boston University's sailing team before he graduated from that institution in 1989.
O'Connor has taught sailing at a number of clubs throughout Massachusetts, including the Wild Harbor Yacht Club, Chappaquoit Yacht Club, Falmouth Yacht Club, and Nantucket Yacht Club. He is currently the director of the Falmouth Sailing School.
O'Connor's family includes his wife, Jane, and their daughters, Julia and Caitlin. The O'Connors live in Foxboro, Mass.
