New York, N.Y. – The Harvard
women's volleyball team used a balanced attack to earn a 3-0
victory over Columbia Friday night at Levien Gymnasium. The win was
the second of the season for the Crimson over the Lions and snapped
a two-match losing streak.
Harvard (10-15, 5-8 Ivy) who defeated Columbia (6-17, 0-13 Ivy),
26-24, 25-17, 25-19, had three players hit in double figures as the
team had a .393 clip for the match. Five of Harvard's six
offensive players hit .375 or better on the night.
Sophomore Mikaelle Comrie led the way for the Crimson with 14 kills
on 24 swings. Senior Kathryn McKinley added 12 kills and junior
Alissa Flesher registered 10. Rookie Anne Carroll Ingersoll was
errorless on the night with seven kills on 11 swings. Classmate
Christine Wu, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, led both
teams in digs with 10 and served up two aces. Junior co-captain
Lily Durwood handed out 39 assists.
Columbia pulled away from a closely contested first set, turning a
7-7 tie into an 18-9 advantage. After a Harvard timeout, the
Crimson cut the lead to 18-14 and used a Wu ace to make it a
three-point game at 19-16. The Lions managed to move away 21-18,
but the Crimson battled back at 24-21, to score the final five
points of the set. McKinley served the final four points with
Comrie and Flesher scoring on swings.
After another close start to the frame, the Crimson pulled away
earning five straight points to take an 11-6 lead. Columbia closed
the gap, chopping the Crimson's lead to 14-13. Harvard used
strong play at the net and consistent serving to win the next seven
points and take a 21-13 advantage. The Lions were unable to recover
as Harvard rolled to a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Lions came out aggressive in the third stanza, scoring the
first three points of the set and taking an early 5-2 lead. The
Crimson slowly cut away at the lead tying the set at 6-6. The
scored would be tied four more times over the next several points.
Harvard used a McKinley kill to tie it at 11 and then a McKinley
aces to take the lead at 12-11. The Crimson, who would not trail
again in the game, led by many as four before winning five of the
final seven points to earn the victory.
The Crimson plays its final game of the 2008 season tomorrow
afternoon at Cornell. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
