CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seven Harvard
men's lacrosse players have been selected to the Turfer/NEILA
All-New England Lacrosse Team, according to an announcement made
Tuesday. Freshman Jeff Cohen was named the Rookie of the Year,
while junior Jason Duboe and senior Sam Slaughter were each honored
on the first team.
In addition, the foursome of sophomore Dean Gibbons, senior Max
Motschwiller, junior Travis Burr and senior Eric Posner garnered
second team status.
Cohen, a native of Syosset, N.Y., was a two-time NEILA Player of
the Week in his first spring at Harvard. He led the team with 34
goals, 41 points and five man-up scores. Cohen's 34 tallies
rank ninth on the Crimson's all-time single-season list and
placed him third in the conference and eighth in the nation in
goals per game (2.62). He also stood tied for the team lead with
three game-winning tallies and recorded six hat tricks, including
three in a row to close the season. Cohen netted had a career-high
six goals in the Crimson's victory over Holy Cross April 18,
the most for a Harvard player in a game since 2007.
Duboe, a midfielder from Long Grove, Ill., makes his second
straight appearance on the NEILA first team after scoring 11 goals
and handing out eight assists for 19 points. Duboe played in all 13
contests and recorded a season-high five points in a win over Yale
April 25, as he scored two goals and assisted on three other
tallies against the Bulldogs. A preseason NEILA choice, Duboe
tallied three man-up goals during the spring, coming against Stony
Brook Feb. 28, Penn March 21 and Princeton April 11. Duboe was also
an All-Ivy League second-team pick this year.
Slaughter, an NEILA second-team selection in 2008, started all 13
games at defense for the Crimson, which ranked third in the nation
in scoring defense (6.69 goals allowed per game). A native of
Wilton., Conn., Slaughter, a Harvard co-captain and second-team
All-Ivy choice, grabbed 27 ground balls, including a season-best
four against Duke Feb. 22 and at Princeton.
After finishing second on the Crimson with 21 goals and six assists
for 27 points in only 10 games, Gibbons, who received All-Ivy
honorable mention, earned a nod to the NEILA second team. A product
of Garden City, N.Y., he tied Cohen for the team lead with three
game-winning tallies, coming against Stony Brook, Presbyterian
March 27 and Dartmouth May 2. He established a new career high with
five goals against Presbyterian and scored multiple goals on seven
occasions this spring.
Motschwiller, a team co-captain from Glen Head, N.Y., appeared in
all 13 contests at midfield and tallied 11 goals and dished out
five assists. He was among 30 candidates for the Lowe's
Senior CLASS Award and scored at least one goal in nine of
Harvard's 13 games this season.
Burr, an attacker, ranked third on Harvard with 16 goals and tied
for third with 19 points. A product of Northport, N.Y., Burr had a
career-best four goals in the Crimson's win over Hartford
March 13 and posted four multiple-goal efforts in his junior
campaign.
Posner, a native of Huntington, N.Y., played in all 13 games,
starting nine, at defense for the Crimson. He was second on the
team with 36 ground balls and tied for second with eight caused
turnovers. He grabbed a team-high six ground balls in
Harvard's win at Duke and also scored two goals and handed
out four assists on the season.
The Crimson went 8-5 overall to finish with a winning record for
the first time since the 2004 campaign. Harvard, which appeared No.
18 in the final United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association
(USILA) national poll this season, went 3-3 in the Ivy League, good
for fourth in the Ancient Eight standings.
