CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's volleyball team rallied from a set down to square the match at 1-1, but couldn't overcome conference rival Yale as the Bulldogs took a 3-1 victory Friday night at the Malkin Athletic Center. Harvard moves to 5-14 on the season and 2-5 in conference action while Yale ups its record to 5-2 in Ivy League action.  

Harvard jumped out to a 5-3 lead to start the match but the Bulldogs answered back with a 6-0 run to swing the lead in their favor. The hosts rallied to tie it at 15-15 and again at 19-apiece but the Bulldogs tallied a handful of kills down the stretch to claim the opening stanza 25-23.

The teams traded points all the way through the midpoint of the second set where Harvard strung a few points together to take a 15-12 lead. After a Yale timeout, the Crimson rallied for a 5-1 run, forcing another visitor timeout. Harvard stymied a Yale comeback late and a Teresa Skelly kill sealed the 25-20 win for Harvard.  

Despite falling behind 7-2 in the third set, Harvard stayed close and knotted the score at 15-15. Two Bulldog attack errors gave the Crimson a 19-17 lead but Yale rattled off four straight points to retake a two-point edge. A Haley Wessels kill ended the fourth set, giving Yale a 2-1 match lead. Harvard was unable to bounce back from an early 6-0 deficit in the fourth stanza and the Bulldogs claimed the match with a 25-12 win in the final set.

Sandra Lynne Fryhofer led the Crimson with 12 kills and added a service ace and seven digs to a strong performance. Erin Cooney chipped in eight kills and Anne Carroll Ingersoll recorded seven on the night, while Beth Kinsella tallied 36 assists in the loss. Wessels (17), Bridget Hearst (15) and Erica Reetz (14) all recorded double-digit kills for the Bulldogs and Kendall Polan had 37 assists and three service aces in the win.

The Crimson is back in action tomorrow night as it takes on Brown in a 6 p.m., showdown.
