CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's
water polo team put up 60 goals Saturday in outscoring its three
opponents, 60-14, earning a trio of victories at Blodgett Pool to
open the 2011 season.
In the Crimson's opener against Boston College, sophomore Aisha
Price led Harvard with four goals, two assists and three steals,
while four other Harvard players notched three scores apiece as the
Crimson topped the crosstown rival Eagles, 23-2.
Harvard's second game of the day came against Iona. The first
period was close with just one goal separating the two teams as
Harvard led, 4-3. However, the Crimson would outscore the Gaels,
9-5, in the second frame and blank them, 4-0, in the third to take
a commanding 13-5 lead before finishing off the victory, 17-7.
"We did a good job of dictating the pace and playing Harvard
water polo," Harvard head coach Ted Minnis said of the Crimson's
second game.
Junior Devan Kennifer led the team with five goals and classmate
Shannon Purcell had seven assists and three steals to lead Harvard
to its second win of the day. Junior goalie Laurel McCarthy set a
new career high with 19 saves in the Iona game.
In its final game of the day, Harvard again put up 20 goals,
this time against Villanova in a 20-5 win. The Crimson put up seven
goals in the first period and found the back of the net eight more
times in the second to take a 15-4 lead at halftime. Junior Monica
Zdrojewski had five goals in the game to bring her total on the day
to 10. Kennifer, Price and Christy DiSilvestro contributed three
scores each and freshman Shayna Price added a goal, three assists
and four takeaways.
The Crimson takes a week off before heading to the Marist
Tournament for four games Feb. 19-20.
