The Harvard women's water polo team notched its most wins since 2004-05 with a 16-12 win over Brown Wednesday (Harvard Athletic Communications).
NORTON, Mass. – After trailing for most of the first half Wednesday, the Harvard women's water polo team scored seven unanswered goals in the third period and outscored Brown 10-4 in the second half to defeat the Bears, 16-12, in its regular season finale.
The Crimson (16-13, 2-2 Collegiate Water Polo Association) fell behind early against Brown (10-15, 1-3 CWPA), trailing 5-3 after the first period and facing an 8-6 deficit at halftime. Harvard scored the first two goals of the second frame to tie the game at 5-5, but the Bears went on a 3-1 scoring run for the midpoint advantage.
Brown pushed its lead to 9-6 in the third quarter with a score from Katharine Booher, but the Crimson went on to score the next seven unanswered goals to earn a 13-9 lead and never let it go. The Bears were able to cut the deficit to two to in the fourth stanza with back-to-back goals in the opening 2 1/2 minutes of the game, but Harvard netted the next three to push its lead back up to 16-11. Booher netted a goal with 1:11 remaining on the clock to put the score at 16-12, which was as close as the Bears would come.
Harvard will now prepare for the CWPA Eastern Championship, set for April 29-May 1 at Indiana University. The Crimson will enter the championship as the No. 6 seed and face 11th-seeded Gannon in the first round April 29.
