Box Score Berry recorded her first career double-double to move into
ninth place in Ivy League history with 456 career assists (Gil
Talbot).
AMHERST, Mass. – Brogan Berry
registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists to move
into the Ivy League's all-time top 10 for career assists, as the
Harvard women's basketball team cruised to a 68-47 victory over
UMass Tuesday night in Amherst, Mass.
Berry's 10 helpers matched her career-high and give her 456 for
her career, moving her from 11th to ninth in Ivy League
history. The senior added 12 points to register the first
double-double of her career, and now stands only nine points shy of
moving into Harvard's all-time top 10 with 1,219 career points.
Christine
Clark led the Crimson (6-6) with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting,
while Emma
Golen notched 10 points and six rebounds. Harvard made a
season-high nine three-pointers and combined to shoot 47.4 percent
from the field, while playing smothering defense that limited UMass
(5-10) to 26.6 percent shooting.
Shakia Robinson scored a game-high 17 points while Jasmine
Watson notched 15 points and nine rebounds.
It took more than three minutes before the first basket was
made, but the Crimson eventually caught fire from behind the arc
and stormed out to a 14-4 lead. Miriam Rutzen and
Victoria
Lippert made back-to-back trey's to get Harvard on the board,
and Golen and Clark followed moments later to make it four straight
from three-point range. Missy Mullins' layup
with 12:53 remaining capped off the run and gave Harvard its first
double-digit advantage of the game.
The Crimson was just as impressive at the defensive end early
on, forcing seven UMass turnovers in the first 10-plus minutes and
holding the Minutewomen to 2-of-15 shooting. Harvard used that same
defensive pressure to close out the half on an 18-3 run, with Berry
poignantly coming away with a steal on the frame's final
possession. Four Crimson scored during the stretch to give the team
a 39-15 halftime lead, including Berry who netted all eight of her
first half points in the final 3:02.
Clark led all scorers at the break with nine points and four
assists, while Berry added three assists and three steals. The
Crimson combined to shoot 51.7 percent from the floor and went
6-of-10 from three, and held a 21-16 advantage on the glass.
Harvard's defensive pressure led to 11 UMass turnovers and 10
points off turnovers, as the Minutewomen went just 7-of-27 from the
floor through the first 20 minutes.
Harvard's outstanding shooting continued into the second half,
with Golen and Lippert hitting back-to-back three's for a 45-19
lead. Mullins made it a 53-26 game with her baseline drive midway
through the period and Golen's reverse layup with under eight to
play gave Harvard a 30-point edge, 59-29. Lindsay Louie gave
Harvard its largest lead of the night at 32 points, 62-30, with a
spot-up three from the left corner.
An 10-0 run allowed UMass to pull within 62-40 but it was too
little, too late as the Crimson matched the Minutewomen shot for
shot down the stretch to hold on for the 68-47 victory.
Harvard will continue its current four-game road trip at TCU on
Saturday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
