Balleza Powers Field Hockey to Eighth-Straight Win, Downing Lafayette, 2-0

Box Score

Balleza matched her career-best with 13 goals this season (Mark Manela).

EASTON, Pa. – Senior Marissa Balleza scored in the third minute of each half Sunday, powering No. 20 Harvard field hockey (10-4, 5-0 Ivy) to a 2-0 shut out of Lafayette (7-9) Sunday.

The win is the eighth in a row for the Crimson, extending its program record win streak. The 10 wins matches the 2014 total for the most since 2004 when the Crimson won 11 contests.

Balleza's tremendous senior season continued Sunday, as she scored her 12th and 13th goals, which matches her season-best total for goals scored in a season that she set as a junior. Freshman Maddie Earle set up Balleza for her first tally of the day just 3:30 into the game, guiding a pass from the middle of the circle to Balleza for an easy tap-in.

Harvard's second goal of the contest came in similar fashion three minutes into the second stanza, as Ellie Cookson sent a pass from the right side of the circle to Balleza for another tip-in, making it a 2-0 Crimson lead.

The goals were the highlights of limited offense throughout the day as the two goals marked the only shots on goal for the Crimson, while Libby Manela improved to 8-0 on the year, stopping the only Leopard shot on goal in the first half to earn her fourth shutout of the season and tying her for sixth-most in program history in a single season.

Harvard will now host No. 14 Boston College Thursday in its final out-of-conference game before closing out the year at Dartmouth and versus Columbia.
