PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Harvard field hockey (7-4, 3-0 Ivy) remained unbeaten against its Ivy League brethren Saturday afternoon, shutting out Brown (6-3, 2-1 Ivy), 1-0, on the road at Goldberger Field.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Crimson, matching a 2014 win streak of the same length for the longest since 1990 when Harvard won six straight.
The only goal of the game came from the stick of senior Marissa Balleza, who now stands just one goal behind Judy Collins '99 for the most goals in a career at Harvard. Balleza has 42 in her career and eight this season.
Saturday's goal came just 13 minutes into the action. Sophomore Kathleen Young fed a pass towards the front of the net, finding Balleza's stick for a quick shot that beat the Brown goalkeeper.
Harvard's defense locked down the rest of the way, as sophomore goaltender Libby Manela finished with five saves to earn her third shutout in five starts. Across the field, Brown's Katie Hammacker stopped nine shots.
Two more Ancient Eight foes are ahead on the schedule for the Crimson. Cornell (6-5, 1-2 Ivy) visits Berylson Field next Saturday, Oct. 15. A matchup in New Jersey to face Princeton (7-4, 3-0 Ivy) follows the weekend after. Harvard and Princeton are the only 3-0 teams in the Ivy League after this weekend, with the Tigers set to host Brown next Saturday.
