WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Harvard women's rugby team closed out its regular season Saturday at the Varsity 7's Championship hosted by Army. The Crimson went 1-2 in its pool play contests before being edged in the Cup Semis by AIC, 15-12.
Navy 17, Harvard 10
Aniebiet Abasi opened the game with an 80-meter try and Caitlin Weigel followed with another score to send the Crimson to the break with a 10-0 advantage. Navy tied the game up in the second half and took advantage of a Harvard penalty that led to the game-winning try as the Mids sunk Harvard in its opener.
Harvard 19, Dartmouth 0
The Crimson took a 5-0 advantage heading into the half before two tries and successful conversions sealed the shutout at 19-0.
Army 17, Harvard 10
The host got on the board first, scoring off a scrum to hold the upper hand at 7-0. Abasi went the distance again, sprinting the length of the field to put Harvard within two until the Cadets tacked on another score right before the half to go up 12-5. Army tabbed another try to extend its lead until Dalton Youngblood took it the distance herself, sprinting 100 meters to the end zone to put Harvard within a try, but Army held on to hand Harvard the loss in its final pool play game.
AIC 15, Harvard 12
For the third time on the day, Abasi scored Harvard's opening try, dashing 40 meters to put the Crimson ahead, 5-0, but AIC tied the game up right before the half. The Yellow Jackets took control of the scoreboard at 10-5 until Lydia Burns found the end zone and a successful conversion by Weigel put Harvard back on top, 12-10. However, penalties did the Crimson in once again, as AIC scored the go-ahead try in the final minutes to end the Crimson's run in the Cup Semis.
Harvard will return to action next month at the USA Rugby College 7's National Championships May 27-29.
