CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its final non-conference contest of the season, No. 16 Harvard field hockey (11-4) won a hard-fought 2-1 game against local rival No. 21 Boston University on Tuesday night at Berylson Field.

Sophomore Casey Allen scored her first career goal in the first half, and senior captain Hannah Wellington netted the game winner in the second half to help lift Harvard to the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Libby Manela (4-4) made five saves to earn the win in net, including a save with just over a minute to play with BU pulling its goalkeeper late.

Allen's goal came just 5:19 into the contest, as she took a short pass from Mimi Tarrant and found an open net to give the Crimson an early lead. BU's Petra Hall answered just over two minutes later on a redirection in front of the net, and the game remained tied at 1-1 heading into the half.

Wellington broke the tie with her seventh goal of the season, making a great individual move into the circle past several BU defenders, and beating BU goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan at the 44:55 mark.

Harvard Highlights:

  • Sophomore Casey Allen scored her first career goal, and became the 12th different Harvard player to score this season.
  • Freshman Mimi Tarrant picked up an assist on Allen's goal and is now tied with Kathleen Young for the team lead in points with 23 (eight goals, seven assists).

Game Notes:

  • Harvard finished non-league play with a 7-3 record, including two wins over ranked opponents – tonight's 2-1 win over No. 21 BU, and a 5-3 win over No. 25 Pacific on Sept. 2.
  • Harvard has won two in a row in the series against BU for the first time since a streak of four straight wins from 2001-04.

What's Next:
Harvard returns to Ivy League play this weekend with its final home game of the regular season, a 1 p.m. contest against Dartmouth on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Berylson Field.
