Cornelius Earns All-Tournament Recognition, Harvard Falls to Sacred Heart, American

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its final two matches of the Harvard Invitational, the women's volleyball team (0-3) was edged by Sacred Heart (2-4) and American (4-3). 

At the conclusion of the tournament, Christina Cornelius was tabbed an All-Tournament Team member for her performance this weekend. The junior accumulated 27 kills, a .313 hitting percentage and 13 blocks over three matches.

Match Highlights

  • Erin McCarthy set a career high in assists (41) for the second consecutive match
  • Maclaine Fields added 11 kills to the Crimson attack
  • Christina Cornelius hit .409 on 12 kills, 22 total attacks and just 3 errors
  • Harvard recorded sideout percentages of 73 and 81 in sets one and four, respectively.

 

Set One

  • Points were traded until Harvard made an 8-1 run at 17-13 heading for the set point.
  • A service error from the Pioneers gave the Crimson a 25-14 win in set one.

Set Two

  • Sacred Heart came racing into the second set, registering an 11-4 lead out of the gate.
  • The Pioneers continued to climb, taking set two 25-16.

Set Three

  • Sacred Heart again began the set strong, catapulting itself to another 25-16 victory.

Set Four

  • The Crimson fired on all cylinders to a 7-1 start in set four.
  • Harvard continued to pressure the Pioneers who dropped the set to the Crimson by a score of 25-11.

Set Five

  • Set five saw the score tied five times before back-to-back kills gave Sacred Heart the match with a 15-11 win.

Match Highlights

  • Grace Roberts Burbank and Maclaine Fields led the attack with nine kills apiece
  • Harvard posted a sideout percentage of 87 in set one
  • Sydney Vach has notched at least 12 digs in each of her three collegiate matches

 

Set One

  • The Eagles kept pace with the Crimson before Harvard began to widen the gap at 16-10.
  • A combination of different scorers secured Harvard's final points to take the set 25-16.

Set Two

  • American returned to the court all business, keeping a wire to wire lead through the second set.

Set Three

  • A 7-1 run mid-set gave the Eagles enough momentum to take a 2-1 match lead after set three.

Set Four

  • The Crimson kept the Eagles in check during set four, allowing no more than a three-point lead through the first 10 points.
  • A late run allowed American to close in on the set and eventually seal the match, ending the tournament 3-0.

  

What's Next?

Harvard will head west next weekend to take on Wright State, West Virginia and Tennessee Tech at the Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by Wright State in Dayton, Ohio.
