No. 19 Men's Ice Hockey Beats Dartmouth, 7-3, in Season Opener

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore defenseman Jack Rathbone scored twice to pace six different skaters with multiple points, as No. 19 Harvard men's ice hockey (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) earned a 7-3 win over Dartmouth (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Nov. 1) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

First-years Nick Abruzzese (goal, two assists), John Farinacci (goal, assist) and Henry Thrun (goal, assist) all scored their first collegiate goals, while Casey Dornbach and Jack Badini each tallied three assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Gornet made a career high 44 saves to earn the win in net.

The Crimson got off to a quick start, as Rathbone scored on a nice play in transition at 1:42 of the first period to put Harvard up 1-0. First-year forward John Farinacci forced a turnover and started up ice on an odd man rush, finding Rathbone cutting down the middle of the ice. Rathbone fired a shot off the post and in for his first of the season.

Kerfoot gave the Crimson a two-goal edge after some great puck movement at the end of a Harvard power play. First-year defenseman Henry Thrun found Kerfoot at the right circle with a great diagonal pass, and the senior forward hit the open net at 12:27 to make it 2-0.

A wild six-goal second period ended the way it started, with Harvard holding a two-goal lead.

Dartmouth scored three goals in the opening 6:34 of the frame, with Daniel Warpecha (1:36), Harrison Markell (1:57), and Quin Foreman (6:34) helping the Big Green take a 3-2 lead.

But Harvard responded with a strong second half of the period to retake the lead. Thrun scored his first collegiate goal off a great feed from classmate Nick Abruzzese to tie the game at 3-3. Then :36 later, Rathbone potted his second goal of the game, cutting the left circle and hitting the top corner at 10:56.

Just over two minutes later, sophomore Jack Drury finished off a great passing play in the slot to make it 5-3 at 12:57.

Farinacci added an empty net goal at 17:40 of the third period, and Abruzzese notched his first goal at 19:04 on a rebound chance.
