Goals from Di Verniero, Griffin Send No. 10/20 Women’s Soccer Past Yale, 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jordan Di Verniero scored the game-winning goal in the 51st minute, and junior Hannah Griffin netted a security goal in the 89th minute as No. 10/20 Harvard University women's soccer defeated Yale University, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium in its first Ivy League road match of the season.
 
Following a scoreless first half, the Crimson (8-0-1, 2-0-0 Ivy) netted the game's decisive goal less than six minutes into the second stanza and added a goal with 92 seconds remaining to top the host Bulldogs (1-9-0, 0-2-0 Ivy). The Crimson – ranked No. 4 in the NCAA RPI Rankings – continued its best start to a season since 1996. Harvard stands as one of three programs to open Ivy League play with a 2-0-0 record, alongside Princeton and Brown.
 
Di Verniero scored the game winner at the 50:45 mark, knocking in a loose ball inside the six-yard box following a rebound from a shot on goal from first-year Hannah Bebar. Griffin doubled the lead at 88:28, carrying the ball from the Crimson's defensive half into the Yale penalty area and driving a shot into the back of the net. In the team's fourth clean sheet of the season and second in as many games, junior goalkeeper Hannah Gardner recorded her second shutout of the year.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Jordan Di Verniero scored her first goal of the season and the fourth goal of her career. She now has three points on the year on one goal and one assist. Di Verniero netted her second career game-winning goal.
  • Junior Hannah Griffin posted her first collegiate points on her first career goal.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hannah Gardner made three saves in her second shutout of the season and third career shutout. She improved to 6-0-0 on the year. Harvard posted its fourth clean sheet as a team in 2021.
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (23-6), shots on goal (17-3), and corner kicks (7-1). The Crimson tallied 12 shots on goal in the second half.
  • Junior Angela Caloia led all student-athletes with seven shots and five shots on goal.
  • Six of the Crimson's field players went the full 90 minutes, including seniors Maria DiMartinis, Lara Schenk, and Sophie Hirst and first-years Jade Rose, Josefine Hasbo, and Hannah Bebar.

  • Harvard improved to 34-9-2 all-time vs. Yale and to 11-1-1 in last the 13 matchups with the Bulldogs.
  • The Crimson continued its best start to a season since beginning the 1996 campaign with an 11-0-0 record.
