Vician’s Brace Powers Men’s Soccer Past Penn, 4-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Martin Vician scored a pair of goals, first-year Alessandro Arlotti and senior Alex Debayo-Doherty each scored once, and Harvard University men's soccer defeated the University of Pennsylvania, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in its season finale.
 
The Crimson (8-5-3, 3-2-2 Ivy) held a 2-0 edge at halftime and moved ahead 3-0 early in the second half before both the Quakers (7-6-3, 1-4-2 Ivy) and hosts each scored once within the final three minutes. With the victory, Harvard closed the season on a three-game Ivy winning streak, finishing the year in fourth place in the conference standings and above .500 for the first time since 2016.
 
Vician opened the scoring in the sixth minute, knocking a ball into the back of the net off assists from senior Cornelius Bencsik and Arlotti. Arlotti followed in the 14th minute, driving a shot into the goal off a feed from sophomore Willem Ebbinge. Vician extended Harvard's margin to 3-0 in the 48th minute, volleying a shot into the goal off a long ball from first-year Ludovico Rollo. After Penn's Spencer Higgins scored in the 88th minute, Debayo-Doherty capped the contest's scoring in the 90th minute, placing a shot into the back of the net off a cross from fellow senior Nico Garcia-Morillo.
 
Prior to the match, Harvard honored its seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program, recognizing Paolo Belloni Urso, Cornelius Bencsik, Alex Debayo-Doherty, Fernando Docters, Nico Garcia-Morillo, Håvard Hjermstad, George Nageeb, and Alfred Perez.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Martin Vician scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season and closed the year with 19 points. In Ivy League play only, he finished the season with six goals and 15 points. He tallied points in six of his last eight games of the year and posted three or more points in a game three times. Vician scored four goals in the final three games of the 2021 campaign.
  • First-year Alessandro Arlotti notched his team-leading ninth goal of the season alongside his seventh assist and finished the year with a team-best 24 points. In Ivy play only, he registered four goals and 11 points. Arlotti recorded points in seven of his last eight games and 10 of his last 12 contests. He netted his team-high sixth game-winning goal of the year.
  • Sophomore Willem Ebbinge tallied his team-best 10th assist of the season and notched points in seven of his last eight contests to close the year. Ebbinge ended the year with 14 points. He compiled five assists in Ivy League play.
  • Senior Alex Debayo-Doherty scored his first goal of the year with 18 seconds remaining in the game and season.
  • Senior Cornelius Bencsik posted his fourth assist of the season and finished the year with 12 points.
  • Senior Nico Garcia-Morillo recorded his third assist of the year while first-year Ludovico Rollo tallied his first assist of the season.
  • Junior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson made six saves in the contest. He finished the year with 66 saves in 13 games played.
  • Among Harvard's field players, senior Fernando Docters and first-year Jan Riecke each played the full 90 minutes.
