ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It was a historic evening for No. 12 Harvard field hockey (17-1, 7-0 Ivy League), as the Crimson defeated No. 2 Michigan (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten), 1-0 by way of a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.
With the win, Harvard advances to the Final Four of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament for the first time in program history.
Harvard, which successfully defended six penalty corners in the fourth quarter and overtime periods, also had chances of their own in extra time, putting five shots on Michigan goalkeeper Anna Speiker in the first and second overtime periods.
In the deciding penalty shootout, Harvard went a perfect 3-for-3, with
Rachel Greenwood,
Mimi Tarrant, and
Isa Gooijer (game-winner) all scoring for the Crimson.
Junior goalkeeper
Ellie Shahbo made three stops in net, including the decisive save on Halle O'Neill to win it and send the Crimson team spilling onto the field.
In what was a closely played defensive first half, the Crimson turned momentum in their favor, controlling possession and making several good defensive plays in the midfield.
Harvard threatened twice in the second quarter, as Greenwood got inside the circle and appeared ready for a good scoring play before the ball was poked off her stick.

Avery Donahue nearly found
Lucy Leel on a 2-on-1 break, but Speiker came out to kick the ball away from danger.
Harvard also outshot Michigan 4-0 in the third quarter, before the Wolverines gained momentum in the fourth, outshooting the Crimson 6-0. Harvard survived a yellow card at the end of regulation, while the Wolverines were called for two yellow cards in the second overtime period.
