MAINHEIM, Pa. – Sophomore Joshua Kim won pool A at 174 pounds to lead a group of five Crimson pool winners as Harvard University wrestling opened its 2021-22 season at the Journeymen Classic at Spooky Nook Sports on Sunday.
 
Competing for the first time since March 7, 2020 – a span of 617 days – the Crimson posted a 36-21 overall record on the day with 13 bonus-point wins, including eight falls. Harvard tallied five pool champions and six pool runner-up finishes.
 
Kim took first place in pool A at 174 pounds behind a 3-0 record. First-year Kenny Herrmann came in first in pool C at 141 pounds with a 3-0 mark, and sophomore Nick Marcenelle claimed first place in pool B at 197 pounds behind a 3-0 record. At 184 pounds, first-years Dom Mata and Luke Rada won pools C and E respectively with 3-0 marks.
 
First-year Diego Sotelo (125 pounds, pool A), junior Beau Bayless (125 pounds, pool B), senior A.J. Jaffe (157 pounds, pool B), sophomore Niko Katsuyoshi (157 pounds, pool D), first-year Doak Dean (165 pounds, pool F), and sophomore Leo Tarantino (184 pounds, pool C) all registered second-place pool finishes.

Harvard Highlights

• Harvard tallied 36 wins behind its 36-21 record.
• The Crimson totaled 13 bonus-point wins with four major decisions, one technical fall, and eight falls.
• Sophomore Joshua Kim won the Hammer Award at 174 pounds via his victory in Pool A. Kim topped opponents from Lock Haven, Lehigh, and Hofstra for his 3-0 record.
• First-year Kenny Hermann won pool C at 141 pounds behind victories over Davis & Elkins, Sacred Heart, and Army, He posted a 16-0 technical fall over SHU and an 8-0 major decision over Army.
• Sophomore Nick Marcenelle captured first in pool B at 197 pounds with wins over Buffalo, Oregon State, and Central Michigan. He posted a pair of falls, topping Buffalo in 3:21 and Central Michigan in 3:59.
• First-year Dom Mata went 3-0 to win pool C at 184 pounds. He beat Lock Haven (2-0), LIU (Fall 1:15), and Harvard teammate Leo Tarantino (5-3) on his way to the title.
• First-year Luke Rada took pool E at 184 pounds, besting Sacred Heart (1:47), Buffalo (MD, 12-4), and Bloomsburg (3-1, SV1).
• First-year Diego Sotelo came in second in pool A at 125 pounds, earning a 10-1 major decision over Lehigh.
• Junior Beau Bayless went 2-1 to finish in second place in pool B at 125 pounds, including an 8-0 major decision over Sacred Heart.
• Senior A.J. Jaffe notched a 2-1 record to come in second place in pool B at 157 pounds, registering decisions over Army and Buffalo.
• Sophomore Niko Katsuyoshi took second in pool D at 157 pounds, earning a pair of wins including a fall in 1:18 against Sacred Heart.
• First-year Doak Dean posted a 2-1 mark to gain second place in pool F at 165 pounds behind a pair of decisions over LIU and Bloomsburg.
• Sophomore Leo Tarantino went 2-1 and claimed second place in pool C at 184 pounds, notching decisions over Penn and Lehigh.
